Just before Christmas St John’s attained the bronze level Eco Church award, several years after beginning the journey towards becoming an Eco Church. The awards are administered through the Eco Church project run by Christian charity A Rocha UK, which works to protect and restore the natural world and which is committed to equipping Christians and churches in the UK to care for the environment.

Gaining an Eco Church award involves completing a questionnaire that delves into many different areas of church life, and a church has to score enough points in each of these areas to qualify for an award.

Our Eco Church journey is just beginning. The next steps will be to reach bronze level at St Luke’s as well as at St John’s, and then to work on the steps we’ll need to take to reach the silver award standard at each of the churches. Our eco church group will be doing research on things like how and where to obtain funding that would allow us to do things like establishing a community garden at St Luke’s or modernise our heating and lighting.
