We want both St John’s and St Luke’s to be places where families and children feel safe, welcome and valued. Here are some of the ways we are trying to do that:

    • Once a month at St John’s, on the third Sunday at 9.15am, there is a simple café-style service designed for all ages lasting about half an hour and with refreshments afterwards. Find out more about this joint family service with the cathedral.
    • We hold (almost) monthly “Piccolo” concerts specially designed for pre-school children and their carers.
    • Children aged 7+ are welcome to join the St John’s Junior choir, which provides musical training and opportunities as well as social activities and a chance to sing at some of our services.
    • Older children (10+) can take part in our Youth Group activities
    • And of course we love to welcome children and families into the church through baptism (Christening).

Sunday Activities For Children

Picture of an activity bag and its contents

Children and young people are a very important part of our churches and we want families of all ages to feel comfortable and at home during services. Where possible everyone is included in the service, but there are always additional activities on offer for younger children to help keep them engaged. St John’s has activity bags available for children to borrow and take to their seats; this means that we can all be in church together. There are three sets of bags so look for one that’s suitable for your age group! The welcomers will offer these to you as you arrive. In addition, there is a table opposite the door with activities on;  if you prefer you are very welcome to sit there as a family. There is also a carpeted area further along that side aisle with toys and books for younger children that you are very welcome to use with your children throughout the service. Please feel free to move around during the service and, if you like, to bring children closer to the front as that can help them feel involved.  And if you think of anything else that will help you and your children feel at home please let us know!
