The Church of England’s ministry is rooted in local communities and areas each church serves. These are called parishes. Our parish covers the city centre and the area to the west across the railway line – West Town and the Thorpe Road area. This gives us a particular concern for everyone within this area, but we welcome everyone who chooses to come to us from other parts of the city and more widely.
There are two churches serving this parish.
- St John’s, the historic parish church in Cathedral Square at the heart of the city centre. This is also the civic church for the city.
- St Luke’s, a small early twentieth century building in Mayor’s Walk, in the West Town area of the city.
Ethos and Vision

We are an open and inclusive Christian community and welcome everyone. Our worship is broadly in the liberal catholic tradition of the Church of England.
- Our aim is to be a beacon of faith, hope and love in the heart of our city.
- Our mission is to proclaim God’s love in Jesus Christ so that others will be drawn to follow him and find a place in our community.
- The values that we espouse of being open and inclusive, worshipping and faithful, loving and serving, guide everything we do.
The church has long been a house of prayer and worship, a safe place to deepen an enquiring faith, and a host for concerts, events and hospitality where everyone is welcome.
Everything we do is rooted in our Christian faith
